Welcome
The Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club is the oldest existing Sci-Fi club in New Zealand. It began in 1980, meeting then at the Library. We meet two Tuesdays a month. Details can be found on the 'About us' page.
Next month (Tues, 1st November) the
topic up
for discussion is "Steampunk"
I went into Upper Hutt library and typed 'steampunk' into the search
and up came 6 hits, all relevant. Enthusiasm waned when I found that
only one book was in the genre (and out on loan) and all the others
were discussing it.So I will be turning up with a copy of "The Steampunk Bible" without ever having read a novel. I have read alternate universe books that came close.
Meantime, in keeping with a Dalek theme that has just trundled to an end, the picture at right mixes that and also steampunk. Click on it to have a description of what it allegedly did, and then how it was really made. The language is evocative..."Even today, you can put your ear to a manhole cover in our capital city and hear the distant clanking of brass wheels on brick walkways and the squeal of exterminated rodents."
New on the site
More Daleks have been stuffed into the
Stuff pages. As a parting accolade, they have been
credited with inventing Rock Music. You can read the concise version and
that will feed you onto a much longer 'short story' version if you have 20 mins to waste. -AFE
What is Science Fiction?
Science Fiction is a genre - that is, a grouping of books, movies and the like that seem to fit into a group. It is more correctly called Science Fiction and Fantasy. So called 'hard' SF is supposed to be scientifically exact, and is usually set in the future, to explore the implications of technology. Fantasy on the other hand, makes no pretense to science at all. It allows any society at all to be generated, especially one that sells lots of books and makes the writer rich.We like it for its variety. We also differ in our likes. The monthly meetings cover the variety, and introduce us to new authors and areas of interest.
Enjoy the website, and you are welcome at our meetings.
