Training-Course Offer

Upper Hutt City Council offers free web-training courses for community groups and for samll business-projects. Contact Kim Cheeseman for further details.

A prerequisit for this course is a reasonable familiarity with basic computer concepts, like knowing how to create and manage files and folders etc. Further publishing design experinces are a great help, but not necessary.

This three evening introduction course can certainly not lift you up to the skill level of a professionl web designer, however, our experince so far has been, that all the groups who attended the sessions produced very nicely designed web-sites. Click her to have a look at the group's designs.

Session 1:

Web-design basics. Create Your Own Web-Page.

We will show you how to download and use a freeware web-design program "Serif WebPlus SE" which will allow you to build and maintain your website.

It is our goal to give you sufficient training and enough support to put you in the position to create and later maintain your web-site.

It helps if you can bring design-concepts, layout-ideas, your group logo, as well as images with you to the design class. This will make it much easier for you to quickly build your own meaningful and appealing web-site.

Session 2:

"Serif WebPlus SE" training continues.

Additionally we will introduce IrfanView - a freeware photo-manipulation program - which you may use to produce more

sophisticated photo layouts.

Session 3:

Main topic of that evening will be the introduction of another freeware program " WinScp" which we will use to upload the page(s) you designed to the UpperHuttCommunity.net server.

"Serif WebPlus SE" training continues showing how to apply more advanced functions.

General:

We recommend that, if possible, two members of the group attend the training sessions. It is our experience that this supports the on-going website maintenance significantly.

We expect the groups to behave ethically and use their web-site to enhance communication between the group members and the public.
